LiuGong's driverless roller helps build the tallest concrete face rockfill dam

October 21,2024

On the banks of the Jinsha River, the Lawa Hydropower Station is rising. This dam is not only the world's tallest concrete face rockfill dam, but also an important part of the Jinsha River upstream clean energy base, one of the nine major clean energy bases that the country focuses on building during the 14th Five-Year Plan. The total installed capacity of the power station reaches 2 million kilowatts, the dam is 239 meters high, and the dam top elevation is 2,709 meters.

The Lawa Hydropower Station is located in a high mountain valley at the junction of Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan and Qamdo City, Tibet. The terrain is complex and the construction site is extremely limited. The dam foundation pit is 90 meters deep, the deepest of its kind in China, which brings great challenges to the construction. As of September, the elevation of the entire dam section has reached 2,580 meters. The monthly intensity of the excavation of the material yard and the filling of the dam body has exceeded 1 million cubic meters. The monthly rise height of the dam exceeds 14 meters, making it the fastest concrete face rockfill dam in China.

In the face of the strict requirements for dam filling quality in areas prone to geological disasters and strong earthquakes, the project adopted Liugong unmanned rollers to replace traditional manual operations. This not only solves the problem of low precision of manual rolling, but also ensures the quality controllability of the entire process.

Liugong 6636E unmanned single steel wheel roller performed well in this project with its strong power (294kW engine), exciting force up to 810kN and excellent plateau adaptability. The equipment can easily cope with the task of granite rockfill filling with a single layer thickness of up to 1 meter. In order to meet the standard layer thickness of 0.88 meters per layer, multiple static pressure and vibration compaction operations are required. In addition, the roller is made of high-strength materials and is equipped with a flexible vibration system and a large-size slewing bearing to ensure stability and reliability for long-term continuous operation.

After completion, the Lawa Hydropower Station will provide about 8.224 billion kWh of clean electricity per year, which is equivalent to saving about 2.8 million tons of standard coal and reducing greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide by about 9.1 million tons. This achievement is of great significance for promoting the realization of the country's "dual carbon" goals and further implementing the "West-to-East Power Transmission" strategy.
